Dolls

Since ancient Greece, dolls have historically been the quintessential children’s toy, a loyal companion to take on any number of voyages and adventures. Originally handmade from clay, bone, leather, and corn husks, among many other materials, dolls have historically served as both playthings and their own form of artistic expression. Industrialization widened the materials available for creating dolls, such as plastic and porcelain, for companies like Jumeau, Kestner, and, later, Madame Alexander.

Since its debut in 1959, Barbie has dominated the fashion doll market, reflecting current fashion trends and fads with each release. Bratz, which debuted in 2001, has been the only brand to successfully challenge Barbie’s fashion doll market share, reaching forty percent in 2006.
