Posters & Prints
Poster collecting began around the 1870s, when improved printing techniques allowed for larger prints in greater detail and richer color than previously possible. Since, collectors have sought rare and original posters and prints of popular subjects, those by notable artists, or vintage posters printed via stone lithography or other highly valued processes.
In its heyday prior to the First World War, posters were a prime source of public communication and promotion, but with the advent of new technology such as magazines, radio, and eventually television, posters fell out of favor or were a greatly reduced part of advertising campaigns. It was during this time posters shifted toward political slogans, self-expression, or purely decorative uses. Popular posters today include movie posters, posters of sports figures, educational and motivational posters, and posters of bands and live music events.
