1970 Mercury Cougar 'El Gato'

The lime green Mercury El Gato Concept [Spanish for “The Cat”] was a styling exercise for a futuristic Cougar. The El Gato’s roof was chopped a bit in order to make a smooth line with the trunk – El Gato was the first ever Mercury fastback model.

Designers shaved door handles to keep the body smooth and put 3-spoke wheels with specially designed Goodyear radial tires on it. Front end styling had Cougar’s features. The lifted striping continued across the hood until the hood scoop.

The rear end featured LTD style tail lamps with a racing-like gas filler cap. The square exhaust tips made it unique too. Some people say, that 1970 Mercury El Gato Concept still exists despite Ford's practice to destroy concepts at that time.
