In the early 70 's Mercedes-Benz had the need to replace the old coupe that was producing.
To shorten the development time was chosen as base the roadster SL (R-107), in advanced stage of development. Keeping intact many parts of the body, mechanical and interior of the SL, the car was able to be sold in 1971, with a moderate commercial success. The 350 SLC is then the coupe version of the 350 SL.
