Airfix is the oldest UK manufacturer of scale plastic model kits and has been producing kits for the mass market since 1952. Airfix produces a wide range of kits aimed at all types of scale modellers with subjects such as military aircraft, civil aircraft, ships, galleons, cars, space, figures, dioramas and military vehicles.
Originally incorporated in 1939, London based Airfix survived the war years by manufacturing air-filled products such as inflatable ‘Lilos’, rubberized canvas air-mattresses (hence the name Air-fix which had nothing to do with aircraft!), cheap novelties, and by fulfilling contracts for the war effort and making use of any offcut or spare materials.
