Something Missing?

In 1973 Lesney, manufacturer of Matchbox toys, started a policy of diversification beyond its traditional field of diecast metal models.

One result of this was the introduction of a range of plastic kits, initially of model airplanes, later including models of military vehicles, racing and sports cars, motorcycles and ships.

The range was greatly increased with the 1978 purchase of the American AMT company, but after Lesney's bankruptcy in 1982 AMT was sold on to Ertl. The then new Matchbox company continued production of its own plastic kit range as it had been before the AMT takeover.

In 1991 production of Matchbox plastic kits was passed on to the Revell company, who continued to use the Matchbox brand name until 2001. Thereafter some former Matchbox kits were still produced by Revell, but no longer under the Matchbox name.
