The 'birds' on the rear fenders and 'gunsights' atop the front fenders were part of an optional appearance group for the base models. You rarely see a Ranch Wagon/Custom 300 without them today.
Were they just a very popular option or did Ford make them standard at some point? Maybe this is part of the current trend toward over-restoration and loading up on period accessories.
