The KrAZ-256B was produced from 1966 to 1994 and built by by the Soviet (later Ukrainian) manufacturer KrAZ (in Russian, КрАЗ). This particular model sold until 1977. It is a three-axle dump truck with two driving axles, and a carrying capacity of 12 tons. Primary uses were industrial, road and housing construction, quarries and mines, and construction of dams and canals. The model sold in 40 countries around the world and many were exported to East Germany. In 1986, eighteen specialized trucks were built with changes to the cabin for the cleanup at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
