The original version of this car was completed in 1938, engineered by Gioacchino Colombo, who went on to greater fame with Ferrari. It won the first race it entered.
Formula One had its first season in 1950 and the Alfa won 6 of the 7 races. They decided not to enter the other, the Indianapolis 500.

An updated version known as the 159 was created for the 1951 Formula 1 season.
