After erasing memories and computer records, a Satarran agent posed as the U.S.S. Enterprise's Executive Officer, Kieran McDuff. He convinced the crew that their mission was to destroy their enemies, the Lysians. Picard grew suspicious at the ease with which they penetrated Lysian space, but he refused to destroy their Central Command. McDuff later revealed himself and was subdued.
