Cunningham began the year with a Sebring win by Stirling Moss in his OSCA. Time Magazine put him on the cover with a feature on his success. He planned to bring a new car to Le Mans, the C6R. That didn't pan out because the engine they had planned never came together. For reasons that are unclear to me, they did not bring out the previous year's 3rd place finishing C5R. In fact, that car is shown as having run only that one race. Instead they brought a couple of two year old C4Rs and this Ferrari.
In an effort to determine whether the Ferrari V12 would be a suitable powerplant for the C6R, they put a set of water-cooled brakes on the car and some massive air scoops up front. It ran as high as 6th until a rocker arm broke and later an axle bearing failed, putting it out of the race.
The aged C4Rs finished 3rd and 5th, matching the previous year's high point. After the race, Cunningham spoke to Enzo Ferrari about the failed rocker arm. True to form, Ferrari would not admit the broken part was the main reason that the car had struggled and the two never did business again.
