The GL-1 was built in 1938, based on components from a Gaz M-1, which in turn was based on a 1933 Ford V8. The engine was modified to produce 65 horsepower and attained a top speed of 148 kph (92mph).
GAZ introduced an inline six producing 100hp in 1940 and the decision was made to install it in the GL-1. The grille was modified and a bubble top was installed over the driver's compartment. It achieved 161.9 kph (100.5mph), making it the fastest car in the Soviet Union.
The original car was destroyed, possibly when the factory was bombed during the war. A replica was constructed in 2010 and it resides in the Moscow Museum.
