V8 engines built by Packard with minor alterations to make them different from Clipper units ensured performance was reasonable but due to AMC's lack of enthusiasm for NASCAR the track successes of the old step-down models were not to be repeated. Despite disquiet from die-hard Hudson enthusiasts who labelled the new car the 'Hash', over 45,000 Wasps and Hornets were sold during 1955, over a third up on the previous year.
