The 2nd generation Lexus LS/Toyota Celsior was updated in almost every area but looked very much like the first. It had a two inch longer wheelbase and ten more horsepower. It sold well but not as much as the original, possibly due to a slow US$15,000 (46%) rise in the retail price over the 1990 model.
Once again the car was refreshed midway through its lifespan. The improved 1997 model received a mild facelift, gained thirty horsepower and added a 5th speed to the automatic transmission.
