The origin of the ‘dog tag’ dates to the civil war, but the purpose of a dog tag has not changed. The purpose is to identify soldiers that are wounded or killed while they are in action; they have personal information about the soldiers and convey essential basic medical information, such as blood type and history of inoculations. These tags replace the plastic printed identity cards because of their resistance to harsh weather conditions and durability. Generally, each soldier is allotted two sets.
