Italian Dictator Benito Mussolini assembled a phantom Council of Ministers at Como, north of Milan, and attempted to gather a force of remaining fascist supporters, eventually getting together tens of thousands of fascists in the town. The Allies told the Liberation Committee that they would bomb Como unless this force left, but Mussolini refused to give that order and save the town, but many of his supporters deserted anyway and Musso was forced to flee with his mistress Clara Petacci. He was recognised by the local Communist commissar near a village called Dongo, and the partisans decided to try _ El Duce_ , against orders from Rome. A ten minute trial found Mussolini guilty and he was sentenced to death by firing squad. His last gesture was to turn and smile at his mistress as the sentence was carried out on the afternoon of 28 April. There is no connection with the death of Mussolini, but the German armies in Italy surrendered unconditionally the next day.
