In 1987, Peugeot decided to participate in the "Rally raid" competitions with a 205 T16 suitably modified.
The main changes concern the engine and the chassis. The debut took place in the Rallye des Pharaons in 1987 with the victory of Ari Vatanen who also won the Paris-Dakar of the same year.
