Tuennes And Schael

Tünnes and Schäl are two of the most famous characters of the historical puppet theater (Hänneschen Theater) in Cologne. Tünnes is part of the 'actors' since 1803, Schäl since 1847.

Tünnes means Anthony in local tongue. He always wears a blue shirt and red scarf. He is good natured and he has a farmer's cleverness.

Schäl is slim and wears a black tailcoat. Schäl is also a local word. His name refers to his squinting but can also mean bad or wrong. So his name is intentionally ambiguous because he is cunning and mischievous sometimes.

Bronze Statues of both are found on a small square at Lintgasse 9, 50667 Cologne between the Alter Markt and Great St. Martin church. It is said that rubbing Tünnes' nose will bring you luck. So take a chance :)

There are countless stories about them. Here is one of them as an example:
Tünnes wants to go somewhere right after work but he doesn't want to take his schovel with him. So he sticks the shovel into the ground, clearly visible, and attaches a note to it: "Dear Schäl, please bring me the shovel! I have forgotten it! Your Tünnes"
The next day, the shovel is still in the ground, but an additional note was added: "Dear Tünnes, I can't do that. I haven't seen the shovel. Your Schäl"
