This scary looking black cat is walking over icy grass. The classic yellow logo has a white ring around it with Jólakötturinn written above and city name below in black font.
The Jólakötturinn, or Yule Cat, is part of Icelandic Christmas tradition. The story dates back to the 19th century and is used to encourage good behavior. If chores were completed before Christmas, the reward was new clothes. Those who didn't get new clothes, faced the Jólakötturinn... who would eat them!
The Jólakötturinn is no little cat, it towers above the tallest houses. On Christmas night, the Yule Cat peers inside each house to see what kids received for presents. If new clothes are among their possessions, the big kitty will move along. Otherwise, the child becomes dinner. This is the pet of Grila and Leppaludi and the Yule Lads. It lives with them in a cave up in the mountains.
