  • Weight/Size/Axis:   4.15 g / 17.2 mm / 0

Reference:

  • RPC I 4058A.6 (this coin)
  • cf. RPC I 4061 (Claudius)
  • AMC 1423
  • SNG Levante 1367
  • SNG Tahberer 253 (Augustus)

Other Information:

  • This coin type was originally assigned to Claudius as RPC I 4061 due to the obverse legend ΚΛΑΥΔΙΟϹ ΚΑΙϹΑΡ appearing on some specimens.   Subsequent examination has assigned the specimens without an obverse legend to Tiberius as RPC I 4058A.   However, the coins assigned to Tiberius are currently listed with those of Claudius and can be found as both RPC I 4058A and 4061.
  • This coin is a die match to SNG Tahberer 253 which has been attributed to Augustus. This attribution may be correct but is based on historical considerations which make sense but not on any aspect of the coin. Given that Tahberer doesn't question the atrribution of the other specimens listed as RPC I 4058A to Tiberius and that the busts on all of them are very similar, this coin will remain listed as Tiberius until new evidence is available.
