Millennium Collectables put a concept to Royal Doulton in 1997 to commission a series to mark the Millennium entitled '20th Century Advertising Classics'.Royal Doulton accepted the commission and they began obtaining the necessary licenses from companies owning copyright and trademark rights to the various images. The series was launched at the end of 1998.
