Old Alitalia started off in 1946 as Aerolinee Italiane Internazionali.

Alitalia name derived from the Italian "ALI" meaning wings and "ITALIA" ofcourse being Italy.

In 1957 the Merger of Linee Aeree Italiane with Aerolinee Italiane Internazionali created the one ALITALIA. 

in 1990 a regional subsidiary Alitalia Express was set up.

in 2001 It became a member of SkyTeam with KLM, Air France

in 2004 Alitalia aquired the regional airline, Gandalf Airlines to save from bankruptcy

The NEW ALITALIA story begins after its bankruptcy in 2008
