The Commissioners of Supply organised a County Constabulary in 1839, with a separate Ayr Burgh Constabulary set up in 1850. In 1968 the police forces of Ayr, Kilmarnock and the County were amalgamated. In 1975, this force became part of Strathclyde Police as part of the Council reorganisation of the time.
