Beanie Buddies emerged as a solution to the skyrocketing prices of certain Beanie Babies in the secondary market, which made them unaffordable for many collectors. In order to meet the demand for these sought-after animals such as the Royal Blue Peanut or Humphrey, Ty introduced larger versions called Beanie Buddies. These new collectibles provided an opportunity for collectors to still acquire their favorite animals, but in a bigger size. Initially, Beanie Buddies were sold for $10 each.

On September 30, 1998, Ty introduced the first nine Beanie Buddies: Beak, Humphrey, Jake, Peanut in two versions (royal blue and light blue), Quackers, Rover, Stretch, Teddy (cranberry), and Twigs. Interestingly, Twigs holds the distinction of being the first Beanie Buddy to be retired by Ty.

Beanie Buddies were initially crafted using a novel material called Tylon, or sometimes with a terrycloth fabric. Tangerine was the only Buddy that was made in both of these fabric types. Tylon is renowned for its exceptional softness, smoothness, and its ability to retain vibrant colors. An outstanding example of Tylon's color capabilities is showcased by Lizzy the tye-dye lizard.

Beanie Buddies are available in a wide range of sizes, typically ranging from 11 to 14 inches in height. Some Buddies, like Peace, are offered in various sizes, including regular, large, extra large, and jumbo. The jumbo-sized Peace stands approximately 44 inches tall.
