A Minnesota business that customizes die-cast collectible model cars has teamed with the American Cancer Society to design and make nearly 2,500 cars to sell for a nationwide fundraiser.
Chris Stangler, founder of Hope-based Chris Stangler Customs, approached the nonprofit last August with the idea. He was inspired to suggest a fundraiser for ACS because his first wife had passed away in 2015 from cancer. And model car company Johnny Lightning had offered Stangler an opportunity to design a factory-produced run of model cars, making it easier for him to partner with ACS.
"So, with that aspect, and based off of personal, heartfelt loss in my life, I thought this was an opportunity for me to reach thousands of people with one release," Stangler said.
After some planning with ACS, the cars, 1965 Volkswagen Type 2 Transporters, began selling for $15 each, with 25 percent of the sales going to the nonprofit. The exclusive release is limited to 2,496 cars, selling from the first day of 2019 and ending Dec. 31. About 700 have been sold so far, Stangler said.
The car design includes a pink roof and white sides covered in various cancer-awareness ribbons, along with the phrase, "Until there's a cure for every color." Stangler said he wanted to highlight all cancers, not just one.
