Corgi 1/36 Cars

Series

Something Missing?

In the early 1970s, Corgi began making its main model range to an official scale of 1/36. Previously these models had been made to around 1/43 scale. This decision was taken in order to increase "shelf appeal" to the consumer. By making the models larger, they stood out more on store shelves, making them more visible and also offered "more" for the price in return for minimal increase in material costs.

As with the earlier models, not all the 1/36 models are exactly 1/36, the scales are approximate. It should also be noted that Corgi never recorded these models as being part of an official "1/36 Series".

As with the earlier models, not all the 1/36 models are exactly 1/36, the scales are approximate. It should also be noted that Corgi never recorded these models as being part of an official "1/36 Series".

Rather, these models were a continuation of the standard Corgi cars series, and older models in the series that had been made to smaller scale continued to be produced alongside the new 1/36 models well into the 1970s. As such, "Corgi 1/36 Cars" is an unofficial "series" denotation used by collectors to collectively refer to these larger scale models.

As with the smaller, earlier models, the 1/36 range includes passenger cars, commercial and emergency vehicles, racing cars and character toys. Some other official ranges like the later Corgi Classics models and the CorgiTronics models also fall under it.
