Derby Airways changed its name to British Midland Airways on 01 Oct 1964
– British Midland International (bmi) was established in 1938 as AIR SCHOOLS. Renamed to DERBY AVIATION in 1949 and then again to DERBY AIRWAYS in 1959. Took over the Birmingham based routes of Excutive Air Transport in 1962. BRITISH MIDLAND AIRWAYS (BMA) was adopted in 1965 when the airline moved from Derby to East Midlands Airport. INVICTA AIRLINES merged in in 1969 and LONDON CITY AIRWAYS in 1990. The ‘airlines’ was dropped in 1997 and eventually created a name to reflect the change in route structure in 2001. Absorbed BMED in in 2007. BMI was then rebranded to current name in late 2010. Integrated into British Airways in Oct 2012.
