Something Missing?

Doug Nash, was an innovator in drag racing who built on his Ford connections to create the wild Bronco Buster flip-top Funny Car, then developed the Doug Nash five-speed and other transmissions.

Born in Detroit, Nash had success with an A/FX Comet when he built a lightweight aluminum frame for a flip-top Bronco Funny Car powered by an injected 289ci Ford. With driver the car weighed less than 1,700 pounds. He soon added a supercharger, and campaigned the 8-second Bronco Buster through 1966. In 1967 the NHRA banned both Funny Car pickups and aluminum frames—a one-two punch that killed the Bronco.

He then started Doug Nash Equipment and Engineering (DNEE) in Detroit to offer prototype work for the hometown car manufacturers and to develop the Doug Nash 4+1 and 5-speed racing transmissions. The highly successful transmissions featured a torsion bar that absorbed shocks from torque and fast shifting. The company moved to Tennessee in 1976, and was eventually purchased by Richmond Gear.
