Something Missing?

"A Heart for Children" (Ein Herz für Kinder) is an aid organization that supports children and families in need in Germany and around the world. The organization supports soup kitchens , children's clinics, kindergartens, schools and sports and educational projects, among other things . The association was founded in 1978 on the initiative of the publisher Axel Springer and his Bildzeitung and is still largely financed by the publisher today.

The organization was brought into being in 1978 by the publisher Axel Springer and the Bild newspaper and was originally founded as an action to promote the safety of children in road traffic. Above all, the organization fought for safer transport infrastructure, such as more traffic lights and play streets . The characteristic sticker was created, which met with a great response from the population. In the following years, the number of children killed in traffic fell by 90%. At the end of the 1980s, the field of activity of "A Heart for Children" was expanded. Since then, the association has also been promoting youth welfare and health care in addition to road safety, Public welfare and hunger relief for children. In addition, environmental protection and culture are promoted.

In cooperation with clinics, the organization enables, for example, foreign children to undergo life-saving operations and therapies which in some cases would not be possible in their homeland, and it helps in war and disaster areas. The organization emphasizes that every cent donated goes directly to the children.

According to the association, it is stipulated that around two thirds of the donations go to projects in Germany and one third to projects abroad. The association only supports specific funding projects, so there are no personnel, operating or travel costs.  Most employees work on a voluntary basis, which keeps administrative costs low. These are covered by a large donation from Axel Springer SE and interest income.
