Something Missing?

Amongst the builders and adapters names that feature alongside Brooklin Models on the internet is Fred Lewis.

Fred started collecting model cars in the late 1950s. The first ones were Matchbox 1:66 scale to place around his father's HO railway layout. Some time later Fred got interested in 1:43 models such as Corgi Toys and Dinky Toys.

Later in the 1960s Fred started to buy John Day kits and build them. He still has some John Day, Mikansue and other early kits that he purchased then.

As his collection grew he decided to concentrate on Ferrari sports racing cars.  Fred reckons he has probably built around 400 kits of Ferraris.  Some of the makes purchased included AMR, Annecy Miniatures, Bosica, CAR, CL Modelli, C-Scale, Gamma, Grand Prix Models, GT Turner, Illustra, Leader, Meri, MOG, Precision Miniatures, Provence Moulage, Record, Scale Racing Cars, Starter, Tameo, Tron, and Western Models.

In 1980 Fred purchased a kit of the 1962 Ferrari GTO for $650.00 and built it.  This was produced by the Make-Up Co Ltd of Japan and consisted of 500 pieces to which Fred added probably another 50 pieces.  It was the most detailed 1:43 model Fred had built or has ever seen.  A similar kit was sold on eBay about 10 years ago for $2400.00. Fred has never seen another one that has been built.

Eventually models of American cars of the 1950s started to be made in 1:43 scale. These are the cars that Fred had grown up with and so it was inevitable that he should start to collect them.  Even though there are not many kits of these cars, Fred buys them and will then either rebuild them to create better models, or in some cases he will change them completely into another model.

The base models that Fred adapts are often from Brooklin but from time to time also Conquest, Durham Classics, MiniMarque43, Motor City USA, and Western Models.
