Imperial was the Chrysler Corporation's luxury automobile brand from 1955 to 1975, with a brief reappearance from 1981 to 1983.
The Imperial name had been used since 1926, but it was not a separate make, just the top-of-the-line Chrysler model.
However, in 1955, the company decided to make Imperial its own standalone division, to better compete with its North American rivals Lincoln and Cadillac, as well as European luxury sedans, such as Mercedes-Benz, Bentley, Rolls-Royce, etc.
Imperials would see new body styles introduced every two to three years, V8 engines and automatic transmissions as standard, as well as new technologies that would eventualy filter down to Chrysler corporation's lesser models.

In 1976, it was altogether binned, just to be resurrected once again - as noted above during 1981 and 1983 - when Chrysler again made it a separate make.
