Jaws is an American natural "horror" franchise beginning with the novel Jaws written by Peter Benchley in 1974. Universal Studios acquired the film rights the same year. Peter Benchley along with Carl Gottlieb, and Howard Sackler, adapted the novel for the 1975 film Jaws. Directed by Steven Spielberg, the film starred Roy Scheider as police chief Martin Brody, Robert Shaw as Quint, Richard Dreyfuss as Matt Hooper, and Lorraine Garry as Ellen Brody. The film would go on to have three sequels: Jaws 2 (1978), Jaws 3 (aka, Jaws 3-D) (1983), and Jaws: The Revenge (1987). The franchise expanded to to novelizations based on the screenplays for two out of the three sequels by author Hank Searls (Jaws 3 was not adapted). The franchise also includes video games, notably the 1987 NES game Jaws, and Jaws Unleashed (2006). In addition there have been several attractions at Universal Studios locations around the world, radio dramas, audiobooks, documentaries and more.
