In the comic book series, Judith Grimes was born in a prison, a year after the start of the apocalypse. After The Governor infiltrated the prison, he shoots and kills her mother, also resulting in Judith's death.

In the television adaptation by AMC, she is born via C-section after an attack on the prison, caused by one of the former inmates. Preformed by Maggie Greene, her birth is a success, but Lori dies in the process. She is eventually adopted by her mother's husband, Rick Grimes, and is brought into the care of Beth Greene. Years later, Judith becomes a resident of the Alexandria Safe Zone, and is adopted by Michonne Hawthorne -- becoming a valuable asset to the community, despite only being a child. She is also seen as a symbol of future opportunity by her group. As of the current television timeline, Judith Grimes is one of the four last-surviving members of the Atlanta Camp (despite not having been born yet) and the Prison.
