Kobe Toys

Kobe Toys were created and hand-made from the Meiji period by dock workers in Kobe. While there are not a Brand in the tradional sense we treat them as such here (that is the name they are now known by). As Japan became a more open society in the late 1800s, sailors from overseas visited the port of Kobe and their influence is depicted in the Kobe rendition of an African American based on these interactions, conversations, and sketches. These toys are not common since they were never produced for commercial gain or export, but rather sold as mementos at the docks where the foreign ships were in port.
