The airline was established in 1980 as an independent operator, before Air Berlin PLC acquired the airline and merged its regional service structure as part of airberlin's network. In Aug-2017, airberlin filed to commence insolvency proceedings in order to continue with a "restructuring process". In accordance with negotiations between Deutsche Lufthansa AG and Air Berlin PLC, Lufthansa acquired LGW and NIKI from airberlin for a combined purchase price of EUR210 million. Lufthansa Group integrated LGW operations into Eurowings. On 20-Feb-2019, Zeitfracht Gruppe formally acquired LGW effective 01-Apr-2019.
