It can trace its roots to Justus von Liebig, a German chemist, who established Liebig’s Extract of Meat Company Ltd (LEMCO) in London, UK, in 1865, after previously developing a method in 1847 to make meat extract or broth to provide a cheap and nutritious meat substitute. The Liebig brand went through numerous takeovers and mergers, and is now owned by the GB Foods group.
