c. 500 BC/BCE to 1453 CE
Byzantium or Byzantion was an ancient Greek city in classical antiquity that became known as Constantinople in late antiquity and Istanbul today. Byzantium was colonized by Greeks from Megara in the 7th century BC and remained primarily Greek-speaking until its conquest by the Ottoman Empire in AD 1453. The earliest coins of Byzantium are of the mid-5th century BC. Byzantines were using an iron currency. None of this money has been preserved, and in any case its circulation must have been strictly limited. The silver coins of this wealthy port are extremely common. Byzantium continued to mint coins during Roman times and then throughout the Byzantine era until the fall of the Byzantine Empire. It was the main mint throughout the Byzantine era, except for the period where it functioned as the mint of the Latin Empire (1204–1261).
