c. 530 BC/BCE to unknown date
Naxos or Naxus was an ancient Greek city, presently situated in modern Giardini Naxos near Taormina on the east coast of Sicily. It was the most ancient Greek settlement in Sicily: it was a colony from Chalcis, founded about 735 BC, and derived its name probably from a preponderating contingent from the island of Naxos. The coins of Naxos, which are of fine workmanship, may almost all be referred to the period from 460 BC to 403 BC, which was probably the most flourishing in the history of the city. Its earliest coins although belong to late 6th century BC.
