Alaşehir, in Antiquity and the Middle Ages known as Philadelphia, is a town and district of Manisa Province in the Aegean region of Turkey. Its coinage began around the 2nd century BC. Its coins bore the word Neokoron (literally, "temple-sweeper"—caretaker of the temple). During the reign of Tiberius (14 - 37) the name of the city was changed to Neocaesarea but was changed back to Philadelphia during the reign of Vespasian (69 - 79).
