Prusa was a town of ancient Bithynia, situated at the northern foot of Mysian Olympus. It wasfounded in 202 BCE by Prusias I (228 - 182 BCE), whose name it bears, on the advice of Hannibal of Carthage (lived 247 - 181 BCE). Never a large town, it flourished under Roman control and into the Byzantine era. The Turks captured the town in 1326 and renamed it Bursa, It was the capital of the Ottoman Empire from 1363 to 1395. It only produced coins while under Roman control starting in the 1st century BCE and ending in 268 CE.
