The Pennsylvania Rubber Works moved to Jeannette, Pa. from Erie, Pa. around 1903. They became yet another key part of the city's significant industrial base. Not only did this factory become a significant supplier of play balls (basketballs, footballs, tennis balls, etc.) and carpet underlay as part of General Tire in its later years; but the original Pennsylvania Rubber Works provided products for Jeeps and gas masks during World War II.

They were purchased by General Tire Co. in 1945.: Successively, the corporation became involved in 1935 in industrial rubber products; in 1942 in broadcasting with the purchase of Yankee Radio Network, Boston; in 1944 in rocket propulsion with the acquisition first of a minority interest in Aerojet Engineering Corporation, Azusa, California (and in 1945 controlling interest); in 1945 in tennis ball manufacturing with the acquisition of Pennsylvania Rubber Company, Jeannette, Pennsylvania.
