Pieter Cornelis Mondriaan, after 1906 Piet Mondrian, was a Dutch artist who contributed in the De Stiji art movement. Born in Amersfoort on March 7, 1872, he died at the age of seventy-one on Febuary 1, 1944. He is regarded as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. He is known for being one of the pioneers of 20th century abstract art, as he changed his artistic direction from figurative painting to an increasingly abstract style, until he reached a point where his artistic vocabulary was reduced to simple geometric elements. The National Museum of Serbia was the first museum to showcase one of his paintings in their permanent exhibition.
