Renfe (Red Nacional De Los Ferrocarriles Españoles)

Train Company

Something Missing?

Red Nacional de los Ferrocarriles Españoles (RENFE) (National Network of Spanish Railways), since 2005 Renfe Operadora (Renfe operator), is a national Spanish railway company, which operates in passenger and freight transport.

Renfe was formally dissolved on 31 December 2004 after 63 years as a preparatory action to the rail competition. For this purpose, two new companies were created, the Renfe Operadora and the Administrador de Infraestructuras Ferroviarias(ADIF). Since then, Renfe Operadora has been a sole passenger and freight transport company, with long-distance rail passenger transport and goods transport operating on a cost-effective basis. Local rail transport (including regional transport) continues to be subsidized by the state as part of universal public services. The railway infrastructure network is operated by the newly established railway infrastructure company Adif. At the same time, the entire freight traffic was opened to private competition from 2005, but the actual market opening is sluggish with a share of private operators in 2011 with only about 12% of the transport performance.
