Richard "Dick" Ward

Designer

Something Missing?

It was Auto-Models Ltd of London’s Finsbury Pavement that took Dick Ward into the model business. Dick discovered Auto-Models as a source of 1:24 scale car kits as well as the Merit ones. He was soon commissioned by them to build their display and customer models. When they introduced their 1:43 scale range, Dick was asked to make a brass pattern of the Morgan Plus 4. After Bob Wills took over the range, Dick continued to build the display and customer models of cars and traction engines, as well as helping his uncle with his antiques business.

In his twenties Dick became involved in motor racing, driving a variety of machines including an ‘E’-Type Jaguar and a Porsche 911, competing at most UK circuits and in Italy at the circuit of Mugello.

Then, for many years Dick worked for John Piper making architectural models and helping to develop their model warship kits.

For a brief period he went to Thorp Models and then back to John Piper, now Scale Link, to develop and make patterns for their 4mm (‘00’ gauge) model railway and the 1:32 scale military ranges. He also made many of the ‘Clivedon Collection’ patterns for their aviation jewellery and corporate giftware ranges.

Dick has made patterns from 1:12 scale cars to 1:200 scale aircraft and has worked and been a design consultant for SMTS; Brooklin; Illustra; Marsh Models; Aerotech 1:32 scale aircraft kits; Motor City USA; K&R Replicas; Minimarque43; Formula Models; Bellini 1:20 scale cars; Develotech’s NASCAR range; Promod; Scaledown 1:32 scale tractor kits; Ted Webber; Miltra 1:100 scale military vehicles, Wargames South 1:144 military vehicles, Phil Alderman; Peter Wingfield, and many others.
