Richard Milhous Nixon (January 9, 1913 - April 22, 1994) was an American politician who served as the 37th president of the United States from 1969 until 1974. A member of the Republican Party, Nixon rose to national prominence as a U.S. representative and senator from California. He served as the 36th U.S. vice president from 1953 to 1961. Nixon's five years as president saw the end of U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War, détente with the Soviet Union and China, and the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency. As a result of the Watergate scandal, he became the only president to resign from the office.
