Rods & Customs Magazine (shortened to Rod & Custom after the first month) was a spin-off of Hop Up Magazine.  The first issue was in May of 1953. 

ROD & CUSTOM featured the latest in high-tech as well as the traditional customs, hot rods, and vintage racers. In addition, the magazine offered a variety of how-to and technical articles for the street rod and custom enthusiast, and lots of tidbits from hot rodding's history.

Publication stopped in 1971 and was restarted a year later.  From 1974 to 1981 Rod & Custom Magazine was part of Hot Rod Magazine.  At the end of 1988, Rod & Custom returned as a bimonthly magazine and became a monthly publication in 1993.  In October of 2014 the magazine published it's farewell issue.
