The Roman Republic was a state of the Roman Civilization.  It was governed through public representation of the Roman People. It began in 509 BC/BCE  with the overthrow of Rome's 7th King, Tarquin The Proud and ended in 27 BC/BCE with the establishment of the Roman Empire by Augustus.  During the Republic, Rome's control of its world expanded rapidly.  It grew from a small city to control the entire Mediterranean world.
