Spikes are Koopa enemies that throw spiked balls or bars from within their mouths. They were designed by Hiroyuki Kimura at Nintendo,[2] and they first appeared in Super Mario Bros. 3. Spikes have black Buzzy Beetle-like shells on their backs that are too small for them to enter.
