In 1996, Von Roll sold its steel activities in Von Roll Stahl AG to Moos Holding AG, renaming the company initially to Stahl- und Walzwerke Gerlafingen AG and 1998 to Stahl Gerlafingen AG. The merger of the former Von Roll subsidiary and the Moos Group resulted in the formation of Swiss Steel AG. In 2003, this majority was taken over by the German Schmolz + Bickenbach AG and the Gebuka AG.
In 2006, Swiss Steel sold 65 percent of Stahl Gerlafingen AG to Italian AFV Acciaierie Beltrame SpA. In 2010, AFV Beltrame SpA took over Stahl Gerlafingen AG completely.
