Racing Team

Something Missing?

The AAW Racing Team was a private Finnish racing garage where Leo Kinnunen participated in six race weekends in the 1974 Formula One season. Prior to participating in the F1 series, the team competed in the sports car and Formula 3 series. The stable received funding from Salora and the Colt tobacco brand, among others. The letters AAW come from the initials of Antti Aarnio-Wihuri.

The AAW Racing Team used a TS16 car from the Surtees stable, which is why the official results of the races include Surtees at the Kinnunen stable. The car was an old test car from the Surtees stable, which was no longer in particularly good condition and had a gearbox incorrectly installed by a Canadian mechanic hired from Surtees. For example, the body had been damaged, and the best possible tires were no longer available for an overweight and underweight car. The test runs of the stable were run in Keimola.

Kinnunen never cleared the qualifiers for the race weekend in his car, but still drove in one race, the Swedish GP. He was disqualified from the competition for PR reasons. He had to interrupt the race due to an engine failure because, according to preliminary mechanics, cross-wiring the spark plugs would take the engine to its best in eight revolutions. The car is currently on display at the Turku Sanomat Car and Communications Museum.
